Works well if you know how to use it,
I also live in Central America and am blessed to have this. I live in an area with Amoebic cysts which are harder to filter than the also abundant bacteria. It makes 10 gal. a day if the water is clean and 5 gal. a day if it is particulate dirty. If your water is really dirty, let it settle a day or so, then decant before filtering… or clean the filter half way through your 5 gal. Replace the tube with a longer 1/4 inch vinyl plastic tube and suspend your tank-with-filter from the ceiling… more altitude than this does not improve the filtering but getting it up a bit really helps. Larger diameter tubes will not pass bubbles. Clean the filter under running water (or under water) with Very light circular strokes with a used soft toothbrush… if you use the scrubby pad that comes with the unit, or even moderate tooth-brushing, your filter will be rapidly worn away. The ceramic elements are rather fragile and will sometimes crack, so be gentle and have some epoxy handy to coat any little cracks near the ends. Suck hard on the filter while it is in its reservoir to remove any bubbles… bounce it around lightly while sucking, then lay it on its side for filtering. After extensive review, i went with this and am on my third unit in 8 years, often providing drinking water for workers. Make sure to dry the filter thoroughly before storage! The first half-liter from a dry filter will taste terrible (resin?) even after many uses. Note that this unit does not work for viruses or chemicals… not a problem here unless your source is really polluted.
Update: for the last several months i have been using a new filter that is far far better! Much faster, 10 times finer filtration, smaller and lighter, more durable, lasts much longer, at about 50% higher cost – totally worth it. The Sawyer PointOne Filter (available on Amazon). Initially it did 5 gal. (19 L) in 17 to 20 minutes. Now it has settled in at about an hour for that 5 gal. I recommend a back-flush with the included syringe after every use. The syringe works much better if you slice out the threads designed to hold the needle as they make a leaky fit… takes a very fine-pointed knife. The company has another filter (PointZero Two) with even finer but slower filtration if viruses are a problem. As with the above filter, i suspend the water from the ceiling and use some ordinary 1/4 inch vinyl tubing to give a bit more head pressure. I would recommend a pre-filter of some sort if your source has a lot of particulates.

|Katalyn filter 5gals takes over 30hrs to filter,
I am very disapointed in the Katadyn (model #1120070). We moved to Belize a month ago and bought two filters from amazon. It is suppose to filter 1.3 gallons per hour. It is more likely 5 gals 30hours. This is our main means of getting our drinking waTER!
