Very good filter, but…, July 13, 2011

I had a smaller filter on my house which is on a water well. My well has a fair amount of sand and rust and with the smaller filter and I was having to change the filter a lot. It was a pain. I figured that if I had a larger filter, the filter change intervals would be longer and life would be better.

I ended up buying this. The big blue filter media is about 4x the mass of my older filter, which means the filter could theoretically last 4x as long. I haven’t had to change my filter yet so I can’t say with certainty if this is true, but I don’t see why it wouldn’t be.

It was easy to plumb this into my water supply. I have PVC pipes and just turned off my pump and cut my old PVC pipes out and put in new. Warning: this housing uses 1″ PVC pipes. Yes, I know it says it in the specs but make sure you know what size your pipes are. Mine were 3/4″ and I wasn’t aware of that. Fixed it with some 1″ to 3/4″ PVC adapters.

Why did I only give it four stars? Well, this filter housing uses the standard 4×10″ filter size. That’s good. Then I found out they make 4×20″ filters and housings. You can buy a new bottom (the part that screws on) and the longer filters and then you’ll have double the filter. If I had known that, I would have gone that route. I can’t just change the bottom on mine because the way I mounted it and ran my PVC pipes, there isn’t room for the extra 10″ below it. If I had known, I would have mounted it higher and routed the pipes differently just in case I wanted the longer filters.

Also, there is a metal bracket made by Culligan that is great for mounting this. Amazon sells it for about $15. Worth it.

A great cleanser, January 29, 2007

I have used this product for about two months, and really like using it. I have tried several cleansing oils: DHC, Aloette, Dermalogica and this one works well for me. What I like about it is (1) the price (2) it is not drying after rinsing the skin (I found DHC to be drying) (3) it does not sting my eyes (Dermalogica’s pre-clease really irriated my eyes) and (4) it does not break out my slightly oily skin.

The Aloette oil is ok. It is thinner than the Pur Minerals and does not seem to rinse as well. My skin does not feel drying after rinsing off the Pur Minerals – just moisturized – although I follow up with Eucerin’s gentle hydrating cleanser.

There are so many cleansing oils on the market; hope this is helpful.

I have coarse curly color-treated hair that tends to be dry. This is the first product that I can use every day or every other day with absolute amazing results. Curls are held together and no frizzy fly aways. I love this product and take it with me on travel too.

This stuff made my hair so soft and so nice! My hair is normally frizzy, and poofy, unmanagable, but this stuff makes it wonderful! I love it! no greasy feeling that I’ve had with other products, like Smoothe Operator from Got2B and Frizz Ease. The smell is also amazing. Its a really wonderful product!

My initial experience is of a product that is durable, well-made, and easy to service and maintain. It comes with a great little field carry bag, and Katadyn is thoughtful enough to include a durable plastic isolation bag for the clean-side tubing to eliminate cross-contamination. The filter is easy to change, actually much easier to remove than I expected as it doesn't need to be tightened excessively. I was initally dismayed to find that my unit leaked from the top of the cylinder when I first tested it, but I discovered that the filter had been over-tightened and was causing a gap in the gasket. Once I released that pressure and just tightened the filter finger-tight it didn't leak a drop. New users, don't forget to flush the unit to clean out all the loose carbon particles before the first use; they won't hurt you but you'll sure notice the discoloration. Also, only attach the tubing far enough to prevent leaking, it doesn't come off easily. My disclaimer has to be that I can’t yet tell you anything about the longevity of this product, maybe when I can I’ll remember to update my review. My initial experience is of a product that is durable, well-made, and easy to service and maintain. It comes with a great little field carry bag, and Katadyn is thoughtful enough to include a durable plastic isolation bag for the clean-side tubing to eliminate cross-contamination. The filter is easy to change, actually much easier to remove than I expected as it doesn’t need to be tightened excessively. I was initally dismayed to find that my unit leaked from the top of the cylinder when I first tested it, but I discovered that the filter had been over-tightened and was causing a gap in the gasket. Once I released that pressure and just tightened the filter finger-tight it didn’t leak a drop. New users, don’t forget to flush the unit to clean out all the loose carbon particles before the first use; they won’t hurt you but you’ll sure notice the discoloration. Also, only attach the tubing far enough to prevent leaking, it doesn’t come off easily. I can hardly wait for an excuse to use this product in the field and report on how it performs over time and volume.

Pumping action is smooth and without much tension, so you can filter at a fast rate which is handy when you are filling up for 3 or 4 people. It's very easy to clean, requiring nothing more than a short run with water and a little bleach when you get home. <br/><br/>When the filter has had it, you will notice it becoming harder to pump. Once that filter is clogged, it will need replacing. Filters are around $40, and this is the one downside to it, but I'm on a year without replacement yet. I think so long as you are not filtering heavily dirty water you should get a good life out of it. <br/><br/>Overall, its easy to use and fast, and will provide you with quick, clean water ready to drink. I have taken this exclusively in the Whites of New Hampshire for a year now on at least 8 or so trips, so it’s seen some use.

You should assume that no illness has come from using this, or I wouldn’t have given it 5 stars, so I will write about the other features that make this a nice system.

Aside from it’s relatively light weight, it packs small and is very easy to set up–just attach the intake and outtake and you are done. Pumping action is smooth and without much tension, so you can filter at a fast rate which is handy when you are filling up for 3 or 4 people. It’s very easy to clean, requiring nothing more than a short run with water and a little bleach when you get home.

When the filter has had it, you will notice it becoming harder to pump. Once that filter is clogged, it will need replacing. Filters are around $40, and this is the one downside to it, but I’m on a year without replacement yet. I think so long as you are not filtering heavily dirty water you should get a good life out of it.

Overall, its easy to use and fast, and will provide you with quick, clean water ready to drink. Attach a charcoal filter to it if you want to improve the flavor and filter other impurities.
